Teething Tips
Teething typically begins around 6 months of age, though it can start as early as 4 months or as late as 12 months, and continues until about age 3 when all baby teeth have usually come in. Common signs of teething include drooling, irritability, swollen or tender gums, and a desire to chew on objects. Babies might have a slight increase in temperature in addition but nothing above 101 degrees F or 38.2 degrees Celsius which may indicate some other issue.
To soothe discomfort and inflammation:
- Chilled teething rings, not frozen
- Ice pacifiers filled with mashed bananas or berries, if solids have begun being introduced
- Take a damp washcloth, twist and knot one end, and place in the freezer
- Massage your baby’s gums with clean fingers or after dipping in cool water
- If additional relief is needed, age-appropriate pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used under the guidance of your child’s healthcare provider.
Avoid:
- Numbing gels or creams that contain benzocaine or belladonna
- Honey to infants under 12 months due to the risk of botulism
- Teething necklaces or pacifiers attached to strings or clips, as these can pose choking or strangulation hazards
- Liquid filled teething rings due to potential bacteria growing in the liquid after multiple uses
- With comfort and care, this phase will pass as your baby’s new smile begins to appear.
